After NA, Senate passes Election Act Amendment Bill

ISLAMABAD: Following the National Assembly’s approval, the Senate has passed the Election Act Amendment Bill, which prohibits independent candidates from joining political parties after a designated post-election period, subject to review by the top court.

The “Elections (Second Amendment) Act, 2024” has proposed changes to the Elections Act 2017. Political analysts view this bill as an attempt to undermine the Supreme Court’s July 12 decision, which had ruled in favour of the PTI’s eligibility for reserved seats and positioned it to become the largest party in the National Assembly.
