Amnesty International, Imran Khan’s son voice concern over detention of his sisters, PTI activists

Amnesty International and Imran Khan’s son Kasim Khan have separately criticised the detention of the former prime minister’s sisters and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists.

In a statement posted on X, Kasim Khan said that the detention of his father’s family members and PTI workers reflected restrictions on fundamental rights in Pakistan.

He said Imran Khan’s three sisters had been detained and alleged that PTI activists were also being targeted ahead of the party’s planned protest on September 27.

Kasim said people could be arrested and threatened with violence, but “you cannot imprison 250 million Pakistanis or crush the will of a generation.”

There is little choice left for the people of Pakistan.

Either remain silent while their chosen leader is imprisoned. Whilst his family is detained, his party is suppressed and justice is denied – or come out peacefully and exercise their fundamental right to protest.

He called on the international community to watch developments in Pakistan as people sought to demonstrate peacefully for what he described as justice.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International also expressed concern over the detention of Imran Khan’s relatives and PTI activists.

The rights organisation said the targeting of Imran Khan’s family and PTI workers was a violation of their rights to liberty, freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.

Amnesty International called on Pakistani authorities to immediately release Imran Khan’s relatives and PTI workers, saying they had been targeted because of their familial ties, political affiliation and plans to protest.

The statements come after Lahore authorities ordered the detention of Imran Khan’s sisters Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi for 30 days under public-order provisions. A petition challenging the detention orders was filed in the Lahore High Court on Monday.

Kasim had also previously criticised the arrest of his aunt Aleema Khan in an X post, demanding her immediate release and access for her family and legal team.
