AJK President Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry passes away at 71

ISLAMABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry has passed away at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness, PPP’s media office confirmed on Saturday.

Sultan Mehmood had been receiving treatment in Islamabad. His death has sent waves of grief across Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, and the Kashmiri community worldwide.

Funeral prayers will be offered on Sunday at 3 pm in his native village of Chichiyan, Mirpur, family sources said.

Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry was a prominent political figure in Azad Kashmir, known for his leadership and contributions to the region’s political landscape. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in AJK politics.

Authorities and political leaders have expressed condolences, highlighting his services for the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the broader Kashmiri community.

Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani expressed deep grief over the passing of Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, describing him as a “dignified and principled politician.”

“Chaudhry played a significant role in promoting the Kashmir issue at the international level, and his services will always be remembered,” Gillani said, adding that his political struggle served as a “beacon for future generations.” He also extended condolences to the bereaved family.

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also paid tribute, praising Chaudhry’s “distinguished political and social services, particularly his invaluable contributions in highlighting the Kashmir cause on international forums.”

Sadiq added that Chaudhry’s efforts in advocating for the legitimate rights of the Kashmiri people would always be remembered.
