MELBOURNE: Carlos Alcaraz’s bid to reach another Australian Open final took a dramatic turn on Friday as Alexander Zverev forced a fourth set in their semifinal clash, with the Spaniard visibly struggling with physical discomfort during the match on Rod Laver Arena.

After racing into a two-set lead, Alcaraz’s momentum stalled late in the third set when he began showing signs of distress. The 22-year-old was hampered by limited movement, later revealing to his team that he had vomited and was experiencing discomfort in his right adductor. Despite the setback, Alcaraz chose to continue, drawing encouragement from his coaching box as medical staff monitored his condition.
Zverev capitalised on the shift in momentum, keeping rallies long and targeting Alcaraz’s movement. The German edged a tense third-set tiebreak 7-3, clawing his way back into the contest and injecting fresh uncertainty into what had earlier looked like a straight-sets affair. At times, Zverev expressed frustration over stoppages and treatment discussions, but remained focused as he sensed an opening.
Even while clearly restricted, Alcaraz continued to produce flashes of brilliance, relying on touch, drop shots and first-serve accuracy to stay competitive. The crowd rallied behind the Spaniard as he held serve early in the fourth set, showing no immediate intention of retiring despite his physical struggles.
As play continued, the semifinal evolved into a test of endurance and resolve. With a place in the Australian Open final at stake, the outcome now hinges on whether Alcaraz can manage his condition and finish the job – or if Zverev can complete a remarkable comeback against a wounded opponent.
