All-rounder Swanepoel leaves team during final to catch flight

WEBDES: KWhat should have been a thrilling domestic final turned into a bizarre spectacle after Beyers Swanepoel walked off the field mid-game, leaving the Lions a man short at the worst possible moment.

The allrounder exited during the closing stages of the 50-over final on Sunday, not due to injury, but to catch a flight to England, as the match hung in the balance.

With Swanepoel gone after the 43rd over, the Lions were forced to defend their total with just 10 fielders. The Titans capitalised on the chaos, sealing a dramatic three-wicket win with just one ball remaining to lift the trophy.

Ironically, Swanepoel had played a key role earlier, returning figures of 3-44 in his full quota of 10 overs. But his sudden departure left his teammates stunned, many initially believing he had picked up an injury.

When it became clear he had left for travel reasons after signing with Worcestershire for the upcoming County season, umpires refused to allow a substitute fielder, leaving the Lions to finish the high-stakes clash undermanned.

The fallout has been swift and serious. The Lions have launched an investigation into Swanepoel’s conduct and could go as far as withholding his No-Objection Certificate (NOC), which would prevent him from playing in England.

Team officials did not hold back. Lions CEO Jono Leaf-Wright said the player’s actions went against the team’s culture and values, adding that he had let both the union and fans down.

The Lions were already dealing with disruption after head coach Russell Domingo left a day earlier to join Hampshire, though his departure had been planned. Swanepoel’s mid-match exit, however, turned the final into a controversy that overshadowed the cricket itself.
