Amanda Knox reconvicted on slander charges by Italian court

FLORENCE: Amanda Knox has once again found herself entangled in legal troubles as Italian courts reconvicted Knox on slander charges on Wednesday.

The United States citizen gained world wide attention for her involvement in the widely publicised murder trial of her British roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007. Initially convicted of Kercher’s murder in 2009, she was later acquitted and released by Italy’s highest court in 2015.

Knox’s latest legal entanglement can be traced back to the aftermath of Kercher’s murder in 2007. Knox was the prime suspect in her roommate’s brutal murder. Despite being acquitted since 2015, Amanda Knox still faces accusations of having murdered her roommate.

She also falsely accused her then-boss Patrick Lumumba of murdering Kercher during police interrogation. Despite retracting her accusation later, Knox found herself reconvicted on slander charges against her former boss.

During the recent court proceedings, the US citizen maintained that her initial accusation against Lumumba was made under duress. She claimed that the Italian police pressurised her during interrogation.

Knox described feeling deceived and coerced. She stated she was a “scared young woman” manipulated by the Italian law enforcers.

The reconviction on slander charges marks a setback for Knox, despite her earlier acquittal of murder charges.

While talking to the media, her legal team stated they were surprised and “disappointed” at the outcome . The legal team said they will appeal the conviction once the written ruling is released.
