WEB DESK: In what appeared to be a gross misrepresentation of news, Russia Today-India or RT-India has deleted the tweet which incorporated a video implying Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif waiting for his sideline meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The apology, however, seemed hollow, as the institution stopped short of taking full responsibility for the misinformation, merely stating that it “may” have been a misrepresentation. Many Indian news outlets also used the same video to claim that PM Sharif ‘gate-crashed’ the meeting between Putin and President of the Republic of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The tweet on X said: “We deleted an earlier post about Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif waiting to meet Vladimir Putin at the Peace and Trust Forum in Turkmenistan. The post may have been a misrepresentation of the events.”
The video caused an uproar and provided enough fodder for the propaganda machine to yet again spread rumours and showcase a negative light on Pakistan.
Journalist Tariq Mateen was also quick to jump on the bandwagon and was forced to delete his tweet as well. Many supporters and leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) like Qasim Suri also used the said video to reiterate what the Indian media was portraying.
PM Shehbaz Sharif warns of new terror threat from Afghanistan
PM Sharif was in Ashgabat to participate in the forum of International Year of Peace and Trust 2025, and the International Day of Neutrality. Addressing the attendees on December 12, he warned of a rising terrorism threat from Afghan soil and called on the Afghan government to act. He emphasised Pakistan’s role in mediating conflicts, citing recent efforts in achieving a Gaza ceasefire with support from Qatar, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Iran.
Stressing dialogue and diplomacy as pillars of Pakistan’s foreign policy, he highlighted global challenges like climate change and inequality, and outlined domestic priorities such as green development, financial inclusion, and women’s empowerment. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable peace and development as a UN Security Council member.
