Apple to allow developers to distribute apps directly from their websites

WEB DESK: In response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple announced on Tuesday that software developers using the App Store will soon have the option to distribute apps directly from their websites to EU users.

This change is part of the company’s efforts to comply with the new EU rules, which aim to open up Apple’s closed ecosystem.

The DMA, which came into effect last week, mandates that Apple (AAPL.O) take steps to offer alternative app stores on iPhones and allow developers the choice to opt out of using Apple’s in-app payment system, which currently imposes fees of up to 30%.

In a blog post, Apple stated, “We’re providing more flexibility for developers who distribute apps in the European Union, including introducing a new way to distribute apps directly from a developer’s website.”

As part of this initiative, authorised developers will be granted access to APIs (application programming interfaces) that facilitate the distribution of their apps from the web, integrate with system functionality, back up and restore users’ apps, and more.

Among the key changes is the allowance for developers setting up alternative app marketplaces to offer a catalogue consisting solely of the marketplace developer’s own apps, effective immediately.

Developers also gain the freedom to design in-app promotions, discounts, and other deals when guiding users to complete transactions on their websites, rather than utilising Apple’s template.

These adjustments from Apple come amid persistent criticism from industry rivals, who argue that the company’s compliance efforts are insufficient.

Companies found to be in violation of DMA regulations can face fines of up to 10% of their global turnover.

As the spring approaches, these changes mark a significant shift in Apple’s App Store policies, aligning them with the evolving regulatory landscape in the European Union.
