Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has sparked a heated debate after speaking about lost opportunities in Bollywood, with critics accusing him of playing the “victim card” and questioning his patriotism.
In a recent BBC Asian Network interview, Rahman, 59, reflected on challenges in the Indian music industry. “People who are not creative have the power now to decide things, and this might have been a communal thing also but not in my face,” he said. He added that projects sometimes went to other composers, leaving him to spend more time with family.
Right-wing voices, including Vinod Bansal of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, criticised Rahman, claiming he was defaming India and demanded an apology. “For someone who has earned his living from the Indian industry, the way he is trying to defame the country is highly objectionable,” Bansal told Al Jazeera.
Responding to the backlash, Rahman posted a clarification on Instagram. He said that that his intentions were to uplift and serve through music, expressed gratitude toward India, and highlighted his appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support of the entertainment industry.
Rahman’s career is decorated with global honors, including Oscars, Grammys, and a Golden Globe. His song Jai Ho became an international hit, while Maa Tujhe Salaam from his album Vande Mataram is celebrated for uniting India’s diverse population. His work spans Bollywood and Tamil cinema, with iconic hits like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Dil Se Re, and Tu Hi Re.
Despite the criticism, Rahman’s legacy as a composer and global music icon remains influential, bridging cultures and generations through his melodies.
