Arab league denounces Iranian strikes as ‘Strategic Error’ during emergency summit

WEB DESK: Foreign Ministers of the Arab League convened an emergency video conference yesterday to address the escalating wave of Iranian attacks against several member states.

According to Radio Pakistan, the high-level meeting, held on Sunday, 8 March, followed a week of unprecedented regional volatility that has seen drone and missile strikes target sovereign territories across the Gulf and Levant.

According to the bloc’s Assistant Secretary-General, Hossam Zaki, the session was formally requested by a coalition including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, and Egypt. During the proceedings, Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit described the strikes as a “massive strategic error” by Tehran, asserting that the targeting of civilian infrastructure and vital facilities represents a flagrant violation of international law and the principles of good neighbourliness.

Diplomatic marathon for de-escalation

Parallel to the multilateral talks in Cairo, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been spearheading a diplomatic push to contain the crisis. Over the weekend, the Crown Prince held separate telephonic conversations with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer.

The discussions focused on the urgent necessity of regional stability. Prime Minister Starmer reportedly reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s “steadfast support” for the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its partners, condemning the “indiscriminate and reckless” nature of the recent strikes. Both leaders emphasised that immediate measures for de-escalation are paramount to prevent the current tensions from spiralling into a broader continental conflict.

Regional sovereignty and joint defence

The Arab League’s final statement from Sunday’s summit underscored the inherent right of member states to defend their territories. While the meeting was largely seen as a symbolic show of unity, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty suggested the crisis necessitated a renewed focus on “joint Arab action” to protect national security.

The ministers also voiced concerns regarding provocative threats to maritime navigation, specifically those aimed at the Strait of Hormuz. With the region remaining on high alert, the bloc has called upon the international community to exert diplomatic pressure on Tehran to cease hostilities and respect the territorial integrity of its neighbours
