WEB DESK: The foreign ministers of the Arab League states convened in the Jordanian capital on Monday for a crucial consultative meeting to coordinate positions on mounting regional challenges and to formalise key leadership changes within the bloc.
Hosted by Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi, the high-level huddle served as a prelude to the resumed 165th ordinary session of the Council of the League of Arab States, held under the chairmanship of Bahrain, according to Reuters.
The discussions focused heavily on the worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, rising tensions in the West Bank, and broader regional stability frameworks.
Regional stability and Palestine focus
Addressing the delegates, host minister Ayman Safadi emphasised that strengthening joint Arab action remains the most potent tool to navigate the unprecedented geopolitical friction gripping the Middle East.
The Palestinian issue remained the main focus of the discussions, with ministers calling for an immediate end to actions in the occupied West Bank and urging continued humanitarian aid to address the crisis in Gaza.
The forum also reviewed recent diplomatic developments, including mediation efforts and regional de-escalation initiatives, alongside voicing complete solidarity with Lebanon.
The ministers emphasised the necessity of supporting Lebanon’s state sovereignty and adhering strictly to active ceasefires to prevent a wider regional spillover.
Endorsement of new Secretary-General
Beyond regional security dynamics, the ministerial council successfully completed a significant administrative transition by officially endorsing the appointment of former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as the new Secretary-General of the Arab League.
Fahmy, whose nomination received strong backing from Cairo, is scheduled to formally assume charge of the regional bloc on July 1, 2026.
According to diplomatic sources, the incoming chief has pledged to formulate a renewed strategic vision aimed at safeguarding Arab national security while elevating the League’s economic and social integration programmes across member states.
