ASEAN ministers urge restraint and dialogue amid escalating Iran-US tensions

WEB DESK: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has issued a collective plea for diplomatic persistence, urging the United States and Iran to maintain open channels of communication.

In a joint statement released today, the bloc’s foreign ministers emphasised the critical necessity of transitioning from a fragile ceasefire to a permanent cessation of hostilities, highlighting the severe implications that prolonged conflict could have on global stability, according to Al Jazeera.

A call for permanent peace and diplomacy

The ministers expressed their profound concern over the volatility of the region, advocating for a shift away from reactive military posturing towards a sustainable political settlement.

By urging both Washington and Tehran to “fully implement” current ceasefire agreements, ASEAN leaders underscored that the road to regional security lies in rigorous adherence to established protocols and international law.

The statement further called on both powers to exercise “utmost restraint,” noting that the global community cannot afford a further escalation that might jeopardise years of delicate diplomatic groundwork.

Safeguarding global trade and maritime safety

Beyond the immediate concerns of warfare, the regional bloc highlighted the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a primary artery for international energy supplies.

The foreign ministers called for the “safe and continuous transit” of both ships and aircraft through the waterway, stressing that any disruption to maritime commerce would have a catastrophic ripple effect on the global economy.
