Yesterday, Joe Root and Harry Brook powered a strong England recovery on the opening day of the fifth Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, before bad light and rain forced an early end to play. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, England suffered early setbacks as Australia struck three times in the first session, dismissing Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell to leave the visitors struggling at 57 for 3.

The momentum shifted dramatically as Root and Brook combined for a dominant, unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership of over 150 runs, showing composure and authority against the Australian attack. Root remained unbeaten on 72, while Brook impressed with an aggressive 78, taking England to 211 for 3 after 45 overs. Despite Australia holding a 3–1 lead in the series, England drew confidence from a commanding afternoon session before play was halted due to worsening weather conditions.
