AUCKLAND: Auckland FC defeated Sydney FC 1-0 in the A-League Grand Final on Saturday, becoming the first New Zealand side to win the competition’s championship title.

Midfielder Cameron Howieson scored the decisive goal in the 60th minute, firing a volley that took a deflection before beating goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares and sending the packed crowd at Mount Smart Stadium into celebration.
The historic triumph places Auckland among a select group of cross-border champions in world football, alongside clubs such as AS Monaco in France and Derry City FC in the Republic of Ireland.

Sydney FC, chasing a record-extending sixth A-League crown, failed to mount a comeback despite a late opportunity for captain Rhyan Grant, whose glancing header from Joe Lolley’s cross sailed just over the bar in the 83rd minute.

Moments earlier, Auckland forward Jesse Randall missed a golden chance to seal the contest after blasting over from close range.

The tightly contested final was dominated by disciplined defending from both sides, with few clear-cut chances throughout the match. Auckland striker Sam Cosgrove appealed twice for penalties in either half, but referee Alex King dismissed both claims.

The victory also established a personal milestone for Auckland coach Steve Corica, who secured his third A-League title as a coach, this time against his former club Sydney FC. The Sydney side are the ones who Corica previously guided to back-to-back championships in 2019-20.
