Australia clinched a convincing 28-run victory over England in the first T20I at Southampton on Wednesday. The match was marked by a powerful start from Travis Head, who set the tone with a blazing innings. Despite a middle-order slump, Australia managed to post a challenging total and effectively defended it.
After a rain delay pushed the toss back, England put Australia into bat. The Australians capitalized on the opportunity with an explosive powerplay. Travis Head led the charge, blasting a rapid half-century off just 19 balls. Together with Matthew Short, Head dismantled England’s bowlers, particularly targeting Sam Curran for a flurry of boundaries and sixes. Head’s aggressive knock of 59 from 27 balls included three fours and five sixes, and it played a crucial role in Australia’s final score of 179.
In response, England struggled right from the start. Josh Hazlewood struck early, dismissing Will Jacks in his first over, and the English chase faltered under consistent pressure. Hazlewood and Adam Zampa were instrumental in Australia’s defence, with Hazlewood claiming 3/28 and Zampa taking 2/22. Their combined efforts left England in a precarious position.

England’s top order crumbled, and at 52/4, their hopes seemed slim. Although Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran tried to turn things around with a 54-run partnership, their dismissal within a few balls of each other sealed England’s fate. Livingstone was the top scorer for England with 37 off 27 balls, while Curran added 26. However, their contributions were not enough to chase down the target. With this win, Australia leads the three-match T20I series 1-0.
