Azam Khan opens up about tearful moment on England tour

Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan has spoken candidly about a deeply humiliating experience during a match against England in 2024, revealing that he broke down on the field after facing severe criticism.

In a recent interview, Khan recounted the mental and emotional strain he endured amid poor performances and public scrutiny. Despite representing Pakistan in 14 T20 Internationals between 2021 and 2024, he struggled to find form, failing to register a half-century, and often faced criticism for his fielding.

One match in England, however, left a lasting impact. Khan struggled against the pace attack and sustained an injury, but it was the reaction from fans and media that hit him hardest. He described a particularly stinging moment at The Oval, where a Pakistani reporter asked an English fan about his favourite Pakistani player. The response left Khan shaken:

“Azam Khan, he can’t bat, can’t field,” Khan recalled. “That broke me. Kya yeh izzat hai meri?” (Is this my reputation?)

The incident highlights the heavy toll public opinion can take on professional athletes, especially young players trying to establish themselves on the international stage. Khan admitted the humiliation brought him to tears on the field, exposing the vulnerability behind the fame and spotlight of international cricket.

His struggles culminated in him being dropped from the national squad following the 2024 T20 World Cup. Khan’s recent confession sheds light on the mental challenges athletes face when performance pressures collide with public and media criticism.

Despite the setbacks, Khan says he hopes sharing his experience will encourage understanding of the emotional side of professional sport and support for players dealing with similar pressures.
