ISLAMABAD: Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), has submitted an application to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) today challenging PTI’s intra-party elections.

Earlier, on Saturday he unequivocally rejected the legitimacy of the intra-party elections, vowing to persist in the struggle until PTI achieves a status of transparency within its organizational framework.

“I expressed my reservations yesterday regarding the manner in which these elections were to be held, and today my reservations proved to be true,” Babar had said when Barrister Gohar Ali was appointed as chairman candidate.

Today, on the occasion of submitting application to ECP, he said that fraud was committed in the intra-party election.

“In the constitution of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, there is no mention of caretaker chairman,” he said, adding, “We decided long ago that a chairman can only serve two terms of three years each.”

Babar said, “I was accused of easy-load, now they have downloaded themselves.”

He said that the party members love PTI’s election symbol very much, and that is why they went to the Islamabad headquarters of PTI on December 1, and asked for some clarifications.

“People present at the scene told us that they don’t have anything like what we were asking for,” he added.

The PTI had officially announced the scheduling of its internal elections, mandated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), to take place on December 2, as per the ECP’s directive. The electoral authority had instructed PTI to conduct intra-party elections within 20 days to retain the bat as its poll symbol.
