DUBAI/WASHINGTON: Bahrain has said that a Patriot missile system was involved in the March 9 blast over a residential area, contradicting earlier statements that had blamed an Iranian drone strike.
In a statement to Reuters, Bahraini authorities said the system was used to intercept a drone over a populated area, adding that the action prevented a potential strike and “saved lives,” despite causing injuries to civilians on the ground.
Earlier, the United States military had said that an Iranian drone struck a residential neighbourhood on March 9, wounding several people.
Background
The March 9 incident occurred amid heightened tensions in the Gulf following the escalation of conflict between Iran and Israel, with the United States also carrying out strikes in the region.
Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, has been on high alert due to its strategic location and proximity to key shipping lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
Initial reports of the March 9 blast had raised fears of a direct Iranian attack on civilian areas in Bahrain, fuelling regional concerns over a widening conflict. However, the latest clarification suggests the damage may have resulted from defensive interception rather than a direct strike.
The incident also highlights the risks posed by air defence operations in densely populated areas, as Gulf states remain on edge amid ongoing hostilities and increasing drone and missile activity across the region.
