Baku to host World Urban Forum in 2026; housing, resilience in focus

World Urban Forum

BAKU: Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, will host the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) from May 17 to May 22, 2026. The event, which brings together global leaders, urban planners, and policymakers, will address urgent issues in urban development, particularly around housing and climate resilience.

Baku, known for its mix of modern architecture and historical landmarks along the Caspian Sea, will provide a backdrop for discussions on the future of cities as the world faces growing challenges related to urbanisation. With its rapid development, the city is seen as an example of how urban planning can combine tradition and innovation.

The forum comes at a pivotal moment, as millions around the world struggle with housing shortages, informal settlements, and increased vulnerability to climate change. Organisers aim to tackle these problems by focusing on three key issues:

Housing as a Right: Advocating for the recognition of adequate housing as a basic human right and a cornerstone of social justice.

Building Resilient Communities: Discussing strategies to develop cities capable of withstanding economic disruptions, climate-related events, and rapid population growth.

Sustainable Urban Growth: Exploring ways to create inclusive, environmentally sustainable urban spaces that cater to the needs of all residents.

WUF13 is expected to attract more than 15,000 participants from over 170 countries. The event will serve as a key platform for governments and organisations to set the agenda on urban development, with the ultimate goal of ensuring secure, sustainable housing and resilient cities for future generations.
