WEB DESK: The Balochistan government and the protest committee representing the families of the Ziarat martyrs have reached a written agreement following successful negotiations, the government said on Saturday.
The development came after Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti’s reconciliation efforts, with the government describing the agreement as a step towards peace, mutual trust and reconciliation.
Addressing the jirga, Health Minister Bakht Muhammad Kakar, who headed the government committee, said the agreement had been reached through the chief minister’s “prudent leadership and reconciliation strategy”.
Government vows to address legitimate demands
Kakar said the written agreement was an important step towards strengthening public trust in the government, upholding the rule of law and fulfilling commitments made to the families of the martyrs.
He said the government would ensure implementation of all legitimate demands of the martyrs’ families in accordance with the prevailing policy, adding that “no one would be left alone”.
The minister said the formation of a judicial commission, consultations on law and order and an increase in police capacity were part of the government’s measures. “Martyrs’ sacrifices are a national asset. Respect, support and welfare of their families is the foremost responsibility of the Balochistan government,” Kakar said.
He also paid tribute to the sacrifices of the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps, police, Levies and other law enforcement agencies, saying the struggle for peace continued because of their sacrifices.
Balochistan governor welcomes agreement with families
Balochistan Governor Sheikh Jaffar Mandokhail on Saturday welcomed the successful negotiations as a significant step towards lasting peace and stability in the province.
In a statement, the governor said political dialogue and mutual understanding were more effective than confrontation in resolving disputes, adding that the agreement reflected the importance of consultation and consensus in addressing public concerns.
Mandokhail said a judicial commission would conduct a transparent and impartial investigation into the Ziarat incident.
He added that those killed in the attack would be officially recognised as martyrs, with their families receiving financial assistance and other benefits. The compensation package will also include educational support for the children of the victims, financial compensation and other entitlements.
The governor further announced that various government buildings would be named after the victims in recognition of their sacrifices.
Addressing concerns raised by local residents over revenue-related matters, Mandokhail said a committee headed by the provincial revenue minister would be formed to address public grievances.
He also paid tribute to the negotiating committee, political leaders and the families of the victims for demonstrating patience and wisdom throughout the talks.
“The successful negotiations have paved the way for sustainable peace in the province,” the governor said, adding that the democratic tradition of resolving issues through dialogue and consensus had been further strengthened.
