Balochistan reports poliovirus case in three years

QUETTA: After a hiatus of three years, a case of poliovirus has emerged in Balochistan, as confirmed by the Health Department on Tuesday.
The reported case hails from the district of Dera Bugti, as disclosed by the Health Department sources.
The provincial Health Department further revealed that the presence of poliovirus has been confirmed in a two-and-a-half-year-old child.

Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only countries worldwide where polio is yet to be eradicated. Officially achieving eradication requires a nation to maintain a polio-free status for three consecutive years. Nigeria successfully attained this milestone by being declared free from wild polio in August 2020.
