Bam Adebayo injury sparks fury as Heat call out LaMelo Ball after loss

Bam Adebayo

Bam Adebayo’s injury has sparked major controversy after Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said LaMelo Ball should have been ejected during a tense 127-126 play-in defeat to the Charlotte Hornets.

The flashpoint came early in the second quarter when Ball, after missing a drive, fell to the floor and appeared to grab Adebayo’s left leg. The contact sent the Heat star crashing onto his back, forcing him out of the game with a lower back injury.

No foul was called, and play continued as Adebayo remained down. He later walked to the locker room under his own power but did not return.

“He should have been thrown out of the game for that,” Spoelstra said. “There is no place in the game for that.”

Ball, who scored 30 points and hit the decisive lay-up with 4.7 seconds left in overtime, apologised after the match. He said he had been disoriented after taking a hit to the head during the play.

“I apologise on that one,” Ball said. “I got hit in the head and didn’t really know where I was. I’m going to check on him and make sure he’s OK.”

When asked if the grab was intentional, Ball said he had not seen a replay and maintained he was unaware of his surroundings.

Why officials did not intervene

Crew chief Zach Zarba explained that the incident could not be reviewed because no whistle was blown in real time.

“The play wasn’t whistled and continued into a fast break,” Zarba said. “Because play wasn’t stopped immediately, the window to review it was closed.”

He added that the sequence was reviewed at half-time, while any decision on a potential flagrant foul would now be made by the league.

Heat left fuming as season ends

Spoelstra labelled the play “dangerous” and “stupid”, though he stressed Miami still had chances to win.

“It’s a dangerous play and our best player was out,” he said. “The Hornets made the plays they needed.”

Despite losing Adebayo, Miami forced overtime. Tyler Herro missed a potential game-winner at the end of regulation but later made three free throws to briefly edge the Heat ahead.

Ball responded with a driving lay-up to seal the win for Charlotte, capping a dramatic finish and ending Miami’s season.

Andrew Wiggins described Adebayo’s exit as a “gut punch”, while Davion Mitchell called it a “high-intensity” and physical contest.

The league is now expected to review the incident involving Adebayo in the coming days.
