WEB DESK: The Bangladesh Navy’s stealth guided-missile corvette, BNS Sangram, has arrived at the Port of Mersin in Türkiye for a week-long scheduled visit as part of its ongoing deployment with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The vessel, which reached the Mediterranean port on 14 March, is set to remain in Turkish waters until 21 March 2026. This visit serves as a vital component of the ship’s operational cycle within the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force (MTF), providing an opportunity for logistical replenishment and high-level naval diplomacy between the two nations.
Upon its arrival, the corvette was met with a formal reception, highlighting the robust maritime cooperation between Bangladesh and Türkiye.
The stay allows the crew to engage in professional exchanges and coordination meetings with Turkish naval authorities, further cementing the bond between the two maritime forces.
Strengthening regional maritime security
Since joining the UNIFIL mission in late 2020, BNS Sangram has played a pivotal role in maintaining maritime security along the Lebanese coastline.
As the only South Asian naval asset currently dedicated to this UN mission, the vessel is tasked with preventing the illicit trafficking of arms and ensuring the safety of international shipping lanes in the region.
The stopover in Mersin underscores the international nature of the mission, where personnel from various nations collaborate to ensure regional stability.
Beyond its security mandate, the visit provides a platform for BNS Sangram’s crew to showcase the Bangladesh Navy’s increasing reach and its commitment to global peacekeeping efforts under the United Nations mandate.
Following the conclusion of the port visit on Saturday, BNS Sangram is expected to return to its designated patrol area in the Mediterranean to resume its monitoring and surveillance duties.
