ISLAMABAD: Bangladeshi anti-corruption officials have seized nearly 10 kilograms of gold from the bank lockers of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, valued at approximately USD 1.3 million.
Officials from the National Board of Revenue’s Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) said the discovery was made while opening the sealed lockers that had been confiscated in September, according to an AFP report.
Speaking to AFP on the condition of anonymity, a senior CIC official said, “Following a court order, we opened the lockers and found around 9.7kg of gold belonging to the former premier, including gold coins, bars and jewellery.”
It was revealed during the conversation that Hasina had not deposited certain gifts that she had received during her visits of various countries, which was a legal requirement under Bangladeshi law.
Meanwhile, the CIC is also reportedly probing potential tax evasion to determine whether Sheikh Hasina declared the recovered gold in her tax filings.
Bangladesh has been experiencing political turmoil since the fall of Hasina’s government, with violent incidents continuing amid campaigning for national elections expected in February 2026.
The International Crimes Tribunal in November also sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death over allegations of a brutal crackdown on student-led protests
According to the UN, nearly 1,400 people were killed during the crackdown as Hasina attempted to retain power.
