Barbie Movie hype continues as release date nears

LOS ANGELES: Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, to be released July 20, is already making waves with hype and buzz coming from preliminary reviews.

The movie features Margot Robbie as Barbie doll and Ryan Gosling as her male counterpart Ken. It follows a simple but entertaining plot-line: after living in the perfect world of Barbie Land, the plastic toys venture into the real world to discover the perils of human life.

Robbie and Gosling have been walking red carpets in iconic outfits, dressed in their respective roles for weeks now to promote the movie.

The movie has already inspired viral memes, such as pictures of couples flooding social media accompanied by the caption, “She’s everything. He’s just Ken.”

Entertainment Weekly said “Barbie works hard to entertain both 11-year-old girls and the parents who’ll bring them to the theater. Gerwig co-wrote the script with her partner and longtime collaborator Noah Baumbach, and the entire screenplay is packed with winking one-liners, the kind that reward a rewatch.”

Variety’s review said, “Check out the brain on Barbie! Sure, she’s just a doll, but that doesn’t mean she has to be an airhead. Therein lies “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig’s inspired, 21st-century solution to bringing one of America’s most iconic playthings to life on the big screen.”

Meanwhile, an Uproxx review said, “Barbie is a very weird movie […] quite possibly the weirdest studio movie I’ve ever seen based on a product that another company is very much still hoping to sell.”
