LAHORE: Punjab’s provincial capital Lahore has once again come alive in a burst of colour, music, and joy as the Basant Festival officially began in the provincial capital, ending a wait of nearly 25 years.
From rooftops to streets, the city echoed with the traditional chants of “Bo Kata” as thousands of Lahoris welcomed Basant with unmatched enthusiasm.
Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Rao Abdul Karim has directed Lahore Police to remain on high alert throughout the three-day Basant celebrations, ensuring strict implementation of government-issued Standard Operating Procedures for a safe, peaceful, and joyful festival.
The IG Punjab accentuated a zero-tolerance policy against aerial firing, display of weapons, indecency, obscenity, and all activities that could disrupt public peace. He also ordered indiscriminate and strict action against the use of metal, chemical, and other prohibited kite strings, stressing that the protection of precious human lives is a shared responsibility.
Authorities have reiterated that the ban on kite flying near airports, air routes, sensitive installations, and other prohibited areas remains fully in force. IG Punjab also instructed senior officers to ensure strict compliance with the police code of conduct, calling on the force to demonstrate professionalism and responsibility during the festivities.
Meanwhile, yet another good news from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) added to the festive mood. Winds continued to blow across Lahore at a speed of 5 to 7 kilometers per hour throughout the day, creating ideal conditions for kite flying. The city experienced cool weather, with temperatures recorded at 8°C, while the maximum temperature is expected to reach 24°C.
Celebrations began just minutes before midnight as Lahorians took to their rooftops, lighting up the city with artificial lights, high-pitched music, and skies filled with white and colorful kites. A full Basant atmosphere was witnessed in most areas, including Mochi Gate, where kites were seen flying prematurely amid roaring cheers.
As February 6 began, the wait was officially over. Basant had returned to Lahore under full government patronage, restoring a cherished tradition and reviving the city’s cultural heartbeat.
With law enforcement on alert and the weather on its best behavior, Lahore is celebrating Basant with passion, pride, and precaution; a festival of joy soaring once again in the city of lights, kites, and culture!
