Bayern Munich staged a remarkable comeback from three goals down to defeat Mainz 05 4-3 on Saturday in the Bundesliga, with Michael Olise and Harry Kane playing key roles in a dramatic second-half turnaround.
Mainz dominated the first half and stunned the visitors with a commanding performance. Dominik Kohr opened the scoring after 15 minutes, finishing from Kaishu Sano’s setup following a corner. Paul Nebel doubled the lead around the half-hour mark after Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig saved Nadiem Amiri’s shot but could not stop the rebound. Just before the break, Sheraldo Becker made it 3-0 by reacting quickest to a loose ball after Amiri’s effort struck the crossbar.
Bayern, who had failed to register a shot on target in the first half, responded after the break with key changes as Harry Kane and Michael Olise were introduced.
Nicolas Jackson sparked the comeback in the 53rd minute, converting a cross from Konrad Laimer. Olise then reduced the deficit further with a superb curling finish after another Laimer assist, bringing Bayern back into the contest at 3-2.
The pressure continued as Olise delivered a dangerous cross in the 81st minute, which Jamal Musiala converted to level the score despite the goalkeeper getting a touch.
Just two minutes later, Bayern completed the turnaround when Kane finished from close range after Musiala’s effort was blocked, sealing a dramatic 4-3 victory and extending the club’s winning streak.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised his team’s mentality, saying the second-half response was driven by quality and fighting spirit rather than major tactical changes.
