WEB DESK: Expressing deep concern over the continuing loss of life and escalating tensions in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal has proposed the establishment of a consensus-based truth and reconciliation commission to address the political, economic, and constitutional grievances of the region.

Speaking on the unfolding crisis, the PPP chairman termed the loss of lives, including recent deaths in Rawalakot, a “national tragedy”. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the injured, emphasising that the death of peaceful citizens cannot be treated as an acceptable consequence of political disagreement. He added that the lives of police and security personnel must also be protected.

Crisis created by federal ministers

The former foreign minister criticised the handling of the situation by the federal government, describing the current turmoil as a “man-made crisis” caused by non-political management and highly inappropriate statements.

“I fully understand that this is a crisis created by the federal ministers,” Bilawal remarked, urging them to play a constructive role to find a way forward. He also opposed questioning the Kashmiri identity of the residents of Rawalakot, stating that no one in Islamabad has the right to determine who is or is not a Kashmiri.

While acknowledging the public’s right to peaceful protest, he cautioned against violence and hate speech. Conversely, he warned authorities against indiscriminately branding peaceful citizens as terrorists, anti-Pakistan, or foreign agents simply for demanding their rights. He called for individual, impartial investigations into all specific allegations of violence, whether committed by protesters or law enforcement officials.

Call for political dialogue

Bilawal proposed that the proposed Truth and Reconciliation Commission be constituted with the agreement of all concerned parties. The commission would be mandated to investigate the facts, review outstanding political, legal, and administrative questions including the proscription of the protesting organization and recommend a lasting solution.

The PPP leader appealed to the protesters to suspend their demonstrations, sit-ins, and marches once an agreement is reached on the formation of the commission. Concurrently, he urged the government to halt further administrative measures pending the commission’s findings.

He confirmed that he had discussed the proposal with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who assured him that the matter would be taken up with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Bilawal maintained that the PPP is ready to play its role in mediating the crisis to ensure a resolution based on consent, dignity, and mutual respect.
