LAHORE: In a major step aimed at curbing cheating and restoring confidence in the examination system, Punjab education authorities have decided to introduce digital biometric verification of students for the Matriculation and Intermediate examinations starting from 2026.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting held at the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore, which was attended by senior officials from all nine educational boards of Punjab. The move is part of a broader reform agenda to eliminate forgery, impersonation, and other irregularities, while ensuring greater transparency in the examination process.

Under the new system, students’ identities will be digitally verified through biometric data before they are allowed to enter examination halls. Officials believe this measure will significantly reduce cases of fake candidates and organised cheating.

The meeting also approved comprehensive reforms in the practical examination system. These reforms include the introduction of a standardized grading mechanism, CCTV surveillance in laboratories, and a digital marking system to minimize human error and reduce opportunities for corruption.

To further strengthen the integrity of examinations, authorities have decided to increase remuneration for examination staff and invigilators, acknowledging their role in maintaining fairness and discipline during exams.

Task Force Committee Chairman Muzammil Mahmood issued a stern warning, stating that strict legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to influence examination results or engage in bribery and malpractice.

According to education officials, these reforms are being implemented to restore public trust in the Punjab education system and to ensure that examinations are conducted in a fair, transparent, and merit-based manner.

BISE Lahore has confirmed that detailed guidelines and implementation procedures related to the biometric system and other reforms will be shared with all schools well ahead of the 2026 examination season, allowing sufficient time for preparation and compliance.
