WEB DESK: In a major stride towards financial inclusion and women’s empowerment, Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Senator Rubina Khalid, visited the Central Zonal Office Punjab in Lahore to provide a detailed briefing on the launch of the Social Protection Wallet, the distribution of free SIMs, and direct digital payments for women.
The initiative is aimed at providing financial assistance to one million deserving women nationwide, with over 50 percent of the free SIMs already distributed. The launch comes on the eve of the death anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, whose vision of women’s empowerment through skill development continues to inspire the programme.

Addressing the media during a press conference, Senator Khalid highlighted the importance of the Social Protection Wallet in enhancing transparency and convenience in the payment system. “Under the directives of the President and Prime Minister, BISP has formally launched the Social Protection Wallet to ensure that financial assistance reaches deserving women directly and efficiently,” she said.
She noted that the programme currently supports 10 million women across Pakistan and that approximately half of the free SIM distribution process has already been completed. “BISP is the largest initiative in Pakistan’s history for the inclusion of women in social protection, digital, and financial systems,” she added.

The Chairperson emphasised that the free SIMs, distributed through BISP offices and centres, will enable women to access their digital wallets securely. She assured beneficiaries that no charges are being levied and that BISP staff will activate the wallets on their behalf. “Women must safeguard these SIMs as they would protect cash or other valuables, as all future payments will be delivered through this system,” she urged.
Senator Khalid also recalled the legacy of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, describing her as a symbol of courage, resilience, and the struggle for women’s rights. She highlighted the Benazir Hunarmand Programme, launched to promote economic self-reliance through skill development, quoting Bibi Shaheed: “Skill is your asset.” She stressed that empowering women with skills is crucial for tackling unemployment and ensuring long-term financial independence.

Following the press briefing, Senator Khalid visited BISP SIM distribution centres at LDA Sabzazar, GHS Ali Raza Abad, and Shalamar Bhagwan Pura in Lahore. She reviewed the distribution process, issued instructions to staff to provide comprehensive guidance, and personally advised beneficiaries on the acquisition, correct use, and protection of the SIMs.
The Social Protection Wallet and associated initiatives mark a significant step in Pakistan’s efforts to digitally and financially empower women. Through direct payments and skill-building programmes, BISP is not only extending immediate support to millions but also laying the foundation for sustainable economic self-reliance, honoring the enduring legacy of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
