GILGIT: The body of Chinese mountaineer Guan Jing, who died while descending K2 earlier this week, was recovered on Saturday and shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Skardu, officials confirmed.
According to Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) Senior Vice President Karrar Haidr Guan Jing, 37, died on August 12 due to a head injury sustained from falling rocks during her descent from the summit of K2, the world’s second-highest peak.
She had successfully summited the 8,611-metre mountain a day earlier as part of an international expedition team.
Her body was located at an altitude of approximately 5,400 metres — between 100 and 150 metres above the Advanced Base Camp — and was evacuated by a Pakistan Army Aviation helicopter from Concordia after improved weather conditions allowed aerial operations to resume.
This marked the third deadly incident on Pakistani peaks this season. On July 19, 2025, a local climber, Muhammad Iftikhar Hussain, lost his life after an avalanche struck during an expedition to K2 in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Earlier on June 4, renowned Czech mountaineer Klára Kolouchová died during her expedition on Nanga Parbat (8,125m), also known as the “Killer Mountain.”
Earlier efforts to recover the body had been hampered by poor weather, forcing ground teams to attempt the operation on foot.
Confirming the recovery, Haidri expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Guan Jing and to the entire international mountaineering community,” he said.
Four Pakistani climbers summit Spantik
Meanwhile, a group of four Pakistani climbers has summited the 7,027-meter-high Spantik “Golden Peak,” the expedition organizer confirmed on Saturday.
Ameen Hushevi of Karakoram Calling Treks confirmed that Amina Shigri, Muhammad Amin from Hushe, Mehboob Ali Arando from Gilgit-Baltistan, and Sonia Mehreen from Karachi reached the summit on August 12.
