Pakistan shuts border crossings with Afghanistan, Iran on polling day

WEB DESK: In an effort to bolster security measures during the upcoming general elections on February 8, Pakistan has decided to temporarily close its borders with Afghanistan and Iran.

The announcement was made by the Foreign Office (FO) on Wednesday, confirming that the closures would take effect on February 8 and encompass all types of border crossings, including both cargo and pedestrian routes. Normal operations are expected to resume on February 9.

This move is perceived as a strategic step to ensure the safety of citizens and maintain order during the polling process. The decision to close the borders has been conveyed to both Afghanistan and Iran.

It is noteworthy that the Torkham and Chaman crossings with Afghanistan have experienced intermittent closures recently due to heightened tensions between the two nations.

Despite the recent tit-for-tat missile exchanges with Iran, the border remained open last month.

However, the current closure aligns with Pakistan’s commitment to securing the electoral proceedings, particularly in light of the escalating security concerns.

As the nation gears up for the general elections, security measures have been significantly intensified.
