Boy Scouts of America transforms into “Scouting America” with name change

IRVING: Boy Scouts of America (BSA) announced a name change on Wednesday, following several high profile scandals over the years..

The century-old organisation will change its name to “Scouting America” early next year. This decision was announced by BSA’s President during a virtual news conference at the organisation’s annual meeting in the state of Florida, United States (US).

The president said that the name change represents an “evolution” as the organisation strives to ensure “inclusivity for all.”

The president stated that the new name “Scouting America” symbolises the century-old organisation’s dedication to “embracing diversity” and ensuring that “everyone feels welcome.” He asserted that the organization aims to establish a “safe environment” for youth across the United States.

The BSA president added that the name change would facilitate the organisation’s continued growth, ensure its relevance, and enable it to make a “positive impact” in the world.

Half a decade ago, the Boy Scouts of America made the decision to allow girls to join its programmes. Prior to that, BSA had opted to include the LGBTQIA youth as well.

The name change has not proceeded without challenges. The Boy Scouts name change has encountered significant criticism from conservative circles. Many have denounced it as an instance of one of the oldest organisations in the United States embracing “woke” culture.
