A sequel to F1, the blockbuster racing film starring Brad Pitt, is officially in development, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed.
Speaking to the BBC at the Academy Awards luncheon in Los Angeles, Bruckheimer ended months of speculation by revealing that a follow-up to the Apple Original Films hit is already underway.
“We’re working on a sequel,” he said, declining to give a timeline or confirm casting details.
Released last summer, F1 grossed $630 million worldwide, making it Apple Original Films’ most successful theatrical release to date. The film has also received four Academy Award nominations this year, including best picture.
Pitt, 62, stars as veteran driver Sonny Hayes, who returns to the Formula 1 grid with fictional team APXGP after a long absence. The film was co-produced by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and was shot during the 2023 and 2024 Formula 1 seasons.
Scenes were filmed across multiple race weekends, including the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, blending real-world Formula 1 action with the film’s storyline.
Bruckheimer said Pitt would “of course” be involved in casting decisions but stopped short of confirming whether he would reprise his role in the sequel.
The producer said he was surprised by the film’s awards recognition following a production period affected by industry strikes.
The sequel confirmation comes days after Apple executives teased further news during a recent press event, where Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali told fans to “stay tuned” when asked about a potential follow-up.
Bruckheimer also revealed he is developing several other high-profile projects, including Heat 2, another Days of Thunderfilm, a new Top Gun instalment and another entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
