HOUSTON: In a thrilling FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash at Houston Stadium, Brazil edged past Japan 2-1 in dramatic fashion, sealing victory deep into stoppage time and breaking Japanese hearts at the final whistle.

Japan stunned the favourites early when Kaishū Sano struck in the 29th minute to give the Asian side a surprise 1-0 lead. Despite falling behind, Brazil remained in control of the opening phase, dominating possession and creating the bulk of the chances.

Brazil’s response came in the 56th minute when midfielder Casemiro found the equaliser after Sano’s earlier breakthrough, restoring parity at 1-1 and shifting momentum firmly towards the five-time world champions. The win probability also tilted in Brazil’s favour as the match progressed, reflecting their growing dominance.

Throughout the contest, Brazil controlled 62 per cent possession compared to Japan’s 38 per cent, completing 331 passes at an impressive 93 per cent accuracy, well ahead of Japan’s 154 passes at 89 per cent. The Selecao also outshot their opponents 8-4, registering three shots on target, while Japan managed just one—Sano’s opener.

In terms of discipline, Brazil conceded just one foul while Japan committed six. Brazil picked up one yellow card, while Japan received two, with no red cards shown. Both sides earned two corners each in a tightly contested battle.

Even so, Japan’s defensive resilience kept Brazil frustrated for long spells in the second half as they fought to protect their slim lead. At one stage, Brazil were given a 23 per cent chance of winning in normal time, with a 55 per cent combined probability of progressing including extra time, compared to Japan’s 45 per cent chance of causing an upset.

Just when the match seemed destined for extra time, heartbreak struck in the 90+6th minute. Gabriel Martinelli produced a decisive late finish to complete a stunning turnaround and seal a 2-1 win for Brazil.

With this late blow, Japan exit the tournament after a brave and disciplined performance, while Brazil march into the Round of 16.
