PESHAWAR: A historic moment has been marked in the tribal district of Kurram as it welcomed its first-ever Christian Woman Station House Officer (SHO) at the Parachinar Police Station, according to reports on Wednesday.

Samreen Amir, a 35-year-old law enforcement professional, views her appointment as a significant milestone that underscores the police department’s commitment to diversity.

Samreen has already led numerous raids and actively participated in police exercises throughout the Kurram district. Her primary focus is on assisting voiceless and vulnerable women in the region.

District Police Officer Kurram, Muhammad Imran, emphasized that this appointment aims not only to create a safe environment for women to report crimes but also to address issues such as inheritance disputes, domestic violence, and other challenges faced by women in the area.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Inspector General of Police, Akhtar Hayat Khan, stressed that Samreen’s appointment exemplifies the police department’s dedication to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

He highlighted previous instances of women advancing in law enforcement, including a female district police officer in Batgram and Chitral, as well as a higher number of female traffic police officers in the province.

Inspector General Police Punjab, Aamir Zulfiqar Khan, had earlier issued orders to appoint female SHOs in at least one police station in each district of the province within the next five days.

In compliance with these directives, SI Mehwish Aslam was appointed as the first female SHO in Hafizabad district at Lalelki Mandi police station in January 2023.
