Bridgerton season 5: what we know about the cast shake-up so far

With Bridgerton season 4 now wrapped, attention has quickly shifted to the future of the hit Netflix drama and which familiar faces viewers can expect in season 5.

While the next instalment has not yet confirmed its central couple, speculation is already building around potential returning cast members and possible absences. Production on the next season is expected to begin in the coming months, and the series has historically announced its leading couple close to the start of filming, meaning fans may not have long to wait for clarity.

Here is what we know so far.

Who could lead season 5?

According to showrunner Jess Brownell, the next season could centre on either Eloise or Francesca.

Francesca’s storyline took a major turn in season 4 following the death of her husband John, setting up a potential new arc. Meanwhile, Brownell suggested Eloise’s key relationships, particularly with Kate and Penelope, would remain important if her story takes the spotlight.

Will Daphne and Simon return?

Fan favourites Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset remain question marks.

Phoebe Dynevor, who plays Daphne, previously told Variety she felt satisfied with the character’s arc after two seasons but did not rule out a future return.

However, Brownell recently said there are no plans to recast either Daphne or Simon, played by Regé-Jean Page.

“We are not interested in recasting the characters,” Brownell said, noting it would be a disservice to the original performances.

She added the team would prefer to bring the characters back only when there is meaningful story material, rather than brief cameo appearances.

What about Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte?

Season 4 saw Lady Danbury, played by Adjoa Andoh, part ways with Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) to embark on a long-awaited trip.

Brownell stressed this does not signal an exit, describing the move as a way to “shake up the dynamic” between the characters.

She suggested the shift could allow Queen Charlotte to begin seeing Danbury more as a peer in future storylines.

Which couples are most likely to return?

Several recent leads are widely expected to appear again.

Kate and Anthony, played by Simone Ashley and Jonathan Bailey, have continued to feature beyond their central season and appeared in both seasons 3 and 4.

Similarly, Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton) remained part of the ensemble following their season 3 focus.

While official casting confirmations for season 5 have not yet been announced, Brownell has indicated she would “love to find a time to bring everyone back at some point in the future”.
