British Airways makes history as first UK Airline to launch Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi

WEB DESK: British Airways has officially ushered in a new era of aviation connectivity, becoming the first UK carrier to deploy Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency satellite internet.

The landmark service made its debut on Friday, marking a significant leap forward for the airline’s digital transformation.

Passengers aboard the inaugural flight experienced fibre-like speeds from the moment they boarded, a stark contrast to the often intermittent and sluggish connections traditionally found at 35,000 feet.

The milestone was reached on flight BA197, which departed London Heathrow (LHR) for George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston.

The service was operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registration G-ZBJJ, an aircraft that previously lacked any on-board connectivity. In a move that sets a new standard for the industry, British Airways has made the Starlink service entirely free for all passengers across every cabin, removing the need for loyalty programme logins or tiered payment plans.

The introduction of SpaceX’s satellite technology allows for seamless gate-to-gate browsing, streaming, and gaming.

This rollout forms the centrepiece of a wider £7b investment strategy by the airline, which aims to equip its entire fleet of more than 300 aircraft with the ultra-fast service within the next two years.

By prioritising the 787-8 fleet first, the carrier is ensuring that its previously “unconnected” long-haul routes are the first to benefit from this global connectivity revolution.
