Britney Spears was arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence after a late-night traffic stop in Ventura County, according to reports citing law enforcement sources.
The singer was stopped by officers from the California Highway Patrol in Westlake Village, an area located not far from her home, at around 9:30pm on Wednesday night.
Authorities then transported Spears to a hospital where officers conducted a blood test to determine her blood alcohol content, sources said. She did not suffer any injuries and the hospital visit was carried out solely for testing purposes.
Spears was later booked by the sheriff’s department at approximately 3am, according to inmate records, before being released from custody around 6am the same morning.
She was reportedly alone in the vehicle when officers pulled her over. Representatives for the singer have not publicly commented on the incident.
Arrest comes after recent legal victory
The reported arrest comes shortly after Spears secured a permanent restraining order against a man from Louisiana who allegedly appeared outside her Los Angeles-area home after sharing what were described as disturbing posts on social media.
Previous legal trouble
Spears has previously faced legal issues involving driving.
In 2007, the singer was charged with misdemeanours linked to an alleged hit-and-run involving a parked vehicle in Los Angeles. Those charges were later dropped after she paid for the damages.
A separate charge for driving without a California licence ended in a mistrial after jurors were unable to reach a verdict.
The incident occurred during a turbulent period in the singer’s life, which also saw her lose custody of her two sons with former husband Kevin Federline following a series of widely publicised personal struggles.
Authorities have not released further details and the situation remains developing.
