Broadcom eyes $100bn AI windfall, poised to challenge Nvidia’s chip dominance

NEW YORK: Broadcom is positioning itself as a serious rival to Nvidia in the AI chip market, after projecting more than $100 billion in AI chip sales next year. Shares jumped nearly 3 per cent on Thursday, signalling investor excitement about the company’s growing role in a space long dominated by Nvidia.

As Big Tech races to secure massive computing power for artificial intelligence, Broadcom is designing custom processors that could provide a cost-effective alternative to Nvidia’s expensive offerings. This move puts the company squarely in the spotlight for data centre infrastructure, an area where Nvidia has long held sway.

Companies like Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta are expected to spend over $600 billion this year on AI infrastructure, boosting demand for chips, servers, storage, and networking equipment. Broadcom is set to benefit directly from this surge.

Analysts at Melius Research note that Broadcom has visibility for roughly 10 gigawatts of AI demand by 2027 from clients including Anthropic and Meta Platforms. That’s enough computing power to supply more than 8 million US households, putting Broadcom on par with recent Nvidia and AMD AI deals.

The rise of custom processors, known as ASICs, is increasingly threatening Nvidia’s dominance in the advanced data-centre market. Broadcom’s move into this space suggests that the AI chip battlefield is widening.

While both Broadcom and Nvidia stocks have faced investor concerns about whether AI spending will deliver strong returns, analysts at Summit Insights argue that Broadcom’s opportunity is still expanding. If Thursday’s gains hold, Broadcom could see more than $42 billion added to its market value.

CEO Hock Tan also reassured investors that Broadcom is well-positioned amid global memory chip shortages and limited capacity at TSMC. The company has fully secured a leading-edge wafer and high-bandwidth memory supply through 2028, giving it a solid foundation to compete with Nvidia in the years ahead.
