VIENNA: Bulgarian people are celebrating after their country won the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time ever.
The winner is 27-year-old singer Dara, who impressed everyone with her upbeat and catchy dance song “Bangaranga.” She is now expected to return home to Bulgaria later on Sunday, where fans are waiting to welcome her.
Prime Minister Rumen Radev congratulated her on Facebook, saying the whole country is proud of her achievement. He also said Bulgaria is now ready to host the Eurovision Song Contest next year in its capital, Sofia.
Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova also praised Dara, calling her a great young ambassador for Bulgaria. She said Dara’s win shows that talent, courage, and hard work can make anything possible.
On Saturday night, fans in Sofia gathered to watch the contest, which was held in Vienna this year. The event was also affected by a boycott from five countries due to the Gaza conflict.
Locals said the country was full of excitement after the win.
One fan, Petar Stefanov, said everyone is very proud and feels like Dara won for the whole nation.
Dara said her song “Bangaranga” is about hope and believing that everything will be okay, even during difficult times.
She said she still can’t believe she won, calling it a dream come true.
Bulgaria, which is part of the European Union, has recently faced political instability but has also achieved another milestone this year by joining the euro zone.
