By-elections: ECP seeks report on killing of PML-N activist

LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Sunday took the notice of the killing of a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) worker during a violent clash in Punjab’s Narowal, as well as complaints concerning the alleged abduction of polling staff.

Throughout today’s by-polls across 21 national and provincial assembly seats, the polling process was overshadowed by violent confrontations among supporters of various political parties in different regions of Punjab.

In Narowal’s PP-54, a clash erupted between PML-N and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) workers, resulting in the tragic death of PML-N activist Muhammad Yousuf

. Police reported that Yousuf sustained fatal head injuries from opponents wielding sticks during the altercation. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Consequently, polling in the constituency was halted.

The ECP has also requested a report on the killing of a political worker and the alleged abduction of polling staff in Qila Abdullah.

In response to requests from multiple candidates and the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, the ECP spokesperson announced that the commission has sought reports from the provincial election commissioner of Balochistan and the deputy commissioner of Qila Abdullah regarding the incident involving the alleged abduction of polling staff in PB-50 Qila Abdullah.
