California officially recognises Eidul Fitr, Eidul Azha as holidays

California has signed into law a bill formally recognising Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha in state statute, allowing workers to use existing paid leave to observe the Islamic holidays.

Assembly Bill 2017, signed into law on September 10, recognises the two Eid holidays while providing schools and public workplaces with tools to accommodate people observing them.

The bill was introduced by Assembly member Matt Haney in partnership with Muslim communities and organisations.

“California is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Muslim communities in the country, and their traditions deserve recognition and respect,” Haney said in a statement.

He said recognising Eid in state law would help Californians celebrate the holidays with their families without having to make unnecessary sacrifices.

The legislation also aims to help schools and public workplaces accommodate those observing Eid and reduce potential academic or workplace barriers, according to supporters.

“By formally recognising Eidul Fitr and Eidu Azha, our state affirms the cultural significance of these observances while giving schools and public workplaces practical tools to support those who celebrate them,” Commission Chair Jason Paguio said in a statement.
