Camel battles for life after brutal abuse by landlord in Sukkur

KARACHI: A camel brutally tortured by a landlord in Sukkur last week remains in distress as treatment continues at a private shelter home in Karachi’s Murad Memon Goth.

Sources said that named “Chandni” by shelter staff, the two-year-old female camel is being supported with a cloth harness to help her stand after suffering severe leg injuries.

Staff said that the process, which involves massaging her legs to restore blood circulation, is extremely painful, often causing her to cry out.

Veterinarians explained that because Chandni remained lying down for three consecutive days, she was at risk of bloating, restricted breathing, and blocked blood flow to her limbs — a potentially fatal condition.

The camel’s ordeal began on Friday when, while searching for water, she strayed into farmland in Sukkur.

The landowner allegedly broke her hind leg and dragged her with a tractor, leaving her badly injured.

A video of the incident showed the camel screaming in agony, sparking nationwide outrage.

On Saturday, with the support of the Sindh government, local residents, and animal welfare workers, Chandni was transported to Karachi for urgent care.

Shelter staff ensured minimal strain on her injured legs during the transfer.

PPP leader Faryal Talpur, MPA Awais Shah, and activist Samita Syed have urged the police to file an FIR against the landlord and move the animal to safety.

Veterinary experts said that Chandni’s condition remains “critical but stable.”

Animal rights activists stressed that the case highlights the urgent need to enforce animal protection laws in Sindh.

The shelter home has appealed for donations of durable cloth material such as parachute fabric or denim to build a stronger, more comfortable harness for Chandni’s recovery.

Another camel, named Cammie, that lost its leg to mutilation in Sindh’s Sanghar district in June 2024 stood up for the first time in July 2025, using a prosthetic leg.

The Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project for Animal Welfare shared a video showing the recovery of Cammie.

Cammie’s front leg was allegedly chopped off by a landlord for foraging in his field. Six suspects were arrested and remanded in connection with the incident.
