Can MG U9 shake up Pakistan’s diesel pickup market?

MG U9 price in Pakistan

MG has officially entered the Pakistani pickup market with its all-new U9, marking the brand’s first foray into diesel-powered trucks. Unlike most manufacturers focusing on electric or hybrid vehicles, MG has taken a bold step by introducing a turbocharged diesel engine, signalling a departure from the trend towards electrification.

The U9 is generating buzz online, with some calling it a potential rival to the Toyota Hilux and JAC pickups, while others remain sceptical. Many enthusiasts have dubbed it “daala is daala”, a playful nod to the Hilux’s reputation, sparking lively debates about whether the U9 can truly challenge established models.

The MG U9 was showcased at the Pakistan Auto Show (PAPS) on November 12th, where pre-bookings also opened. Deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of next year. While MG has not confirmed pricing, industry speculation suggests that a price around Rs1.2 crore could make it a strong competitor in the market.

Powerful engine and modern design

The MG U9 is powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which has already proven itself in Australia. It produces 215 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque, paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission and a 4×4 drivetrain with front and rear differential locks. The truck can tow up to 3500 kg and offers 220 mm of ground clearance, making it suitable for both heavy-duty work and off-road adventures.

MG has also focused on comfort and safety. The U9 features seven airbags, L2 ADAS driver assistance, a 540-degree camera system, and driver attention monitoring. The cabin comes with heated, ventilated, and massaging seats for the driver, while passengers enjoy heated seating and wireless charging. Additional touches include a panoramic sunroof, electric tailgate, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display with JBL audio and wireless smartphone connectivity.

MG U9 vs Toyota Revo GR

A quick comparison highlights how MG aims to stand out. The U9 is larger, with a wheelbase of 3300 mm compared to the Revo’s 3090 mm, and rides on 20-inch alloy wheels versus the Revo’s 18-inch. It offers more airbags, advanced driver assistance systems, and slightly higher torque despite a smaller engine.

With its combination of size, power, and premium features, the MG U9 promises to shake up Pakistan’s diesel pickup segment. How it performs against long-standing favourites like the Toyota Revo and ISUZU D-Max will be watched closely by buyers and industry experts alike.
