CCD sub-inspector martyred, wanted criminal killed in Rawalpindi encounter

RAWALPINDI: A Counter Crime Department (CCD) sub-inspector was martyred while attempting to arrest a wanted criminal in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, with police later killing the suspect in a separate exchange of fire.

According to Punjab Police, Sub-Inspector Adnan Ghayyur was conducting an operation to arrest wanted criminal Umar Khan alias Sheena in the limits of Chaklala Police Station when the suspect opened direct fire at him.

The officer sustained a bullet to the head and died at the scene, a police spokesperson said.

After shooting the police officer, the suspect fled the scene. The CCD team continued to pursue him and caught up with him in the Dhok Chaudhrian area, where he allegedly opened fire again.

Police returned fire, killing Umar Khan alias Sheena, according to CCD Regional Officer Hassan Jahangir Wattoo.

The police said that the suspect was a ‘dangerous proclaimed offender’ and was wanted in connection with criminal cases.

A CCTV footage of the incident has also emerged, showing Sub-Inspector Adnan Ghayyur confronting the suspect during the arrest attempt.

Punjab Inspector General of Police Abdul Karim paid tribute to the martyred officer, praising his sacrifice in the line of duty.

The IGP directed police to immediately arrest any accomplices involved in the attack and ordered that all available resources be utilised for the purpose.

He also directed the Rawalpindi police to ensure the welfare and complete care of the family of the martyred officer, saying the police force’s welfare remained a top priority.
