LAHORE: As the New Year commences, a notable spike in the prices of chicken and eggs has been observed in the provincial capital.
On the first day of the year, the wholesale cost of live broiler chicken has surged by Rs 28, reaching Rs 359 per kg. Just a day ago, the same chicken was available at Rs 331 per kg.
This upward trend is mirrored in the retail sector, where the live broiler chicken’s price has risen by Rs 29, bringing the current rate to Rs 373 per kg, up from Rs 344 per kg the previous day.

Adding to the escalating prices, chicken meat is now marked at Rs 541 per kg, reflecting an increase of Rs 42 from the preceding day’s rate of Rs 499.
The impact extends to eggs as well, witnessing a four-rupee hike. Eggs are currently priced at Rs 374 per dozen, compared to Rs 370 per dozen the day before.
Most consumers believe that the price regulator is not dealing with retailers of grocery items like it had dealt with the milk retailers forcing them to sell fresh milk at the official rate and also display rate of Rs200 per litre at their shops.
They criticised the government for its failure to implement its own issued official rates and questioned the purpose of issuing the price lists when no retailer was ready to follow the official prices.
As households navigate these price shifts, the reasons behind this sudden increase in chicken and egg prices remain under scrutiny, prompting consumers to monitor the evolving costs of essential commodities in the early days of the new year.
