China hosts Pakistan-Afghanistan talks in Urumqi to ease tensions

URUMQI: China hosted a week-long informal dialogue between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Urumqi, Xinjiang, from April 1 to 7. The delegations included officials responsible for foreign affairs, defense, and security.

The information came from a post that the China’s Information Minister Lin Jian uploaded to his social media account on X.

During the talks, both Pakistan and Afghanistan emphasized their commitment to the UN Charter and the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, the posted statement said.

They pledged to resolve differences quickly, improve bilateral relations, and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

The two sides expressed gratitude to China for its role as host and mediator, praising its fair and impartial approach and careful facilitation of the discussions.

The delegations agreed to continue dialogue on a comprehensive plan to address key issues in Afghanistan-Pakistan relations. They identified priority areas for action and described the Urumqi talks as productive, committing to maintain communication and further discussions in the future.

Meanwhile, a senior Afghan Taliban leader has welcomed Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in securing a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, calling for peaceful resolution of conflicts and respect for sovereignty.

Speaking to Hum News, Suhail Shaheen said Afghanistan appreciated and supported the announcement of a ceasefire that followed Pakistan’s request. He termed the development a positive step towards reducing tensions in the region.

“We appreciate and welcome the announcement of the ceasefire following Pakistan’s request,” Shaheen said, while reiterating opposition to attacks on civilian areas. “We condemn bombardment of civilian places and installations anywhere,” he added.
