China urges ‘unobstructed’ passage through Hormuz following Trump blockade threat

WEB DESK: China has called for the maintenance of unobstructed navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, following a provocative warning from US President Donald Trump regarding a potential blockade of the vital waterway.

Beijing’s intervention underscores growing international concern over the stability of global energy supply routes. Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun emphasised that the security of the strait is a matter of global significance, rather than a bilateral dispute, according to Al Jazeera.

Global energy security at stake

Addressing the escalating rhetoric between Washington and Tehran, Mr Guo stated that keeping the maritime artery secure and open remains in the “common interest of the international community.”

China, which relies heavily on Middle Eastern crude oil, has historically maintained a policy of non-interference but is increasingly vocal about maritime stability.

Industry analysts suggest that any disruption to the strait through which approximately a fifth of the world’s oil passes could lead to a dramatic spike in global energy prices and significant economic volatility.

Beijing’s diplomatic balancing act

While the Chinese government has stopped short of directly condemning the US President’s remarks, the call for “unobstructed navigation” is a clear signal to the White House to exercise restraint.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial international shipping lane. We hope all relevant parties can maintain peace and stability in the region,” Guo added during the press briefing.

As tensions continue to simmer, Beijing is expected to continue its diplomatic balancing act, seeking to protect its economic interests while avoiding a direct confrontation with the US administration over regional security.
