WEB DESK: Representatives of the Chinese and United States militaries held a working group meeting under the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) in Hawaii last week, where the two sides discussed air and maritime safety and explored ways to improve communication between their armed forces.
According to a statement issued by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on Monday, the meeting took place from May 28 to 29 and was guided by what it described as a shared commitment to building a constructive China-US relationship based on strategic stability, equality and mutual respect.
Focus on military safety and communication
The PLA said the two sides held candid and constructive exchanges on the current security situation in the air and at sea, while also reviewing the implementation of the Rules of Behaviour for Safety of Air and Maritime Encounters since the MMCA meeting in 2025, according to CGTN.
Officials discussed measures aimed at enhancing maritime safety and security between the two militaries, with both sides agreeing that effective communication and regular exchanges could help frontline forces carry out their duties more professionally.
The PLA added that such engagement could deepen mutual understanding and reduce the risk of misperception and miscalculation.
China reiterates sovereignty concerns
The Chinese military also used the meeting to reiterate its opposition to activities it says threaten the country’s sovereignty and security under the guise of freedom of navigation and overflight.
The PLA said Beijing opposes what it described as infringement, provocation, close-in reconnaissance and harassment directed at China.
It added that the country would continue to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests while working to maintain regional peace and prosperity.
The MMCA serves as a platform for dialogue between the Chinese and US militaries on maritime and aviation safety issues, particularly at a time of heightened tensions and increased military activity in the Asia-Pacific region.
